First Lines Friday: April 24, 2020

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

“The Kessoku didn’t trust him.

Aaden expected his months at the palace to give them doubt, but he also hoped his parentage would coerce trust from them sooner.

Why not?

His father’s decision to give military secrets to Kessoku, ones that led to the deaths of the royal family, had done nothing but destroy Aaden’s life so far. Was it outrageous to assume that decision might help him some day?”

Do you recognize the lines?

Hint: It is a new YA fantasy.
