Six for Sunday: Heart-Wrenching Book Endings

Hey there! This week I’m participating in Six for Sunday, a meme hosted by Steph at A Little But a Lot. This week’s prompt is:

Heart-Wrenching Endings to Stories

Ok, just so you know – I cry. A lot. And I cry fairly often when I read books. That being said, I try to avoid books that I know are going to rip my insides out and leave me fetal in bed for days.

The thing is, I get really emotionally invested in books! Who’s with me? Tv shows, movies, plays, even commercials move me sometimes. Yeah, I cried during an Alpo commercial. I’m not ashamed (much – haha!).

So, I’m sure it’ll be no surprise to hear that these books destroyed me:

1. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

Every time I read this, watch any of the films or concerts, or see the musical, my heart is wrenched out of my chest, stomped on and squished before it is carelessly shoved back into my body.

And yet it also inspires me and empowers me. It makes me feel all the feels, and I love it.

2. Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson

A friend recommended this book years ago.

I still haven’t forgiven her.

This book devastated me! I can still remember sitting in my backyard and sobbing as I read the final chapters to this novel.

It upsets me just thinking about it. I need to move on.

3. Allegiant by Veronica Roth

This ending killed me. I wasn’t thrilled with the story as a whole, but the ending is an excellent conclusion to a dystopian novel.

You can’t always have a happily-ever-after in this genre of literature, which Veronica Ross reminded me when she shattered my heart at the end of Allegiant.

4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

When you know who died? Pretty sure I cried my eyes out.

An when I read it for the second time? Cried my eyes out again.

I mean, how many father figures can one kid lose? So wrong. So sad.

5. Champion by Marie Lu

This ending is absolutely heart-breaking and completely PERFECT. Epic, fantastic, gut-wrenchingly emotionally devastating mixed in with a bunch of epic awesome sauce.

6. How Dare the Birds Sing by by Marina Osipova

Oh my word, the ending of this story! I wept. Then, the next day, I told my husband about the story and wept again. He took it in stride since I cry over books all of the time.

This is a fabulous piece of historical fiction, but the end devastated me. This is the kind of story that stays with you long after you finish.

Well, there you have it. Six books that have terribly heart-wrenching, emotionally moving and/or devastating endings. Have you read any of them? Did they devastate you? What made your list? Comment below!

  1. Read Les Misérables. The musical always makes me cry: doesn’t matter if it is the stage show, concerts, and the movie- I still am an emotional wreck, but inspired at the end.

  2. Both the book and musical of Les Misrables made me cry and I am a bloke, my wife caught the last ten 30 minutes of the film an she was crying.

    1. The last 30 minutes is the saddest! Once, my mother and I went to see the musical, and on the way home we put on the CD, and I had to pull over because I started crying all over again! lol It’s such a beautiful and heart-breaking story – my all time fave! 🙂

  3. I love all of these. The ending of Half blood prince gets me everytime and devastates me. I also agree with Les Miserables ending too.
