First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

The night my sister was born, the stars died and were reborn in her eyes.

My mother refused to talk about it-the one night she wished to forget, but never could.

Can you guess the book?

Hint: It is written by Sara B. Larson

Still unsure? Here’s another hint: The sequel is coming out in October.

The First Lines Friday Book is:

Title: Sisters of Shadow and Light

Author: Sara B. Larson

Series:  Sisters of Shadow and Light (Book 1)

Publication Date: November 5, 2019

Page Length: 368 pages

Genre: YA fantasy

Synopsis: The night my sister was born, the stars died and were reborn in her eyes….

Zuhra and Inara have grown up in the Citadel of the Paladins, an abandoned fortress where legendary, magical warriors once lived before disappearing from the world–including their Paladin father the night Inara was born.

On that same night, a massive, magical hedge grew and imprisoned them within the citadel. Inara inherited their father’s Paladin power; her eyes glow blue and she is able to make plants grow at unbelievable rates, but she has been trapped in her own mind because of a “roar” that drowns everything else out–leaving Zuhra virtually alone with their emotionally broken human mother.

For fifteen years they have lived, trapped in the citadel, with little contact from the outside world…until the day a stranger passes through the hedge, and everything changes.

  1. Ahh! Posts like these don’t help my TBR get any smaller, but I’m very grateful to be introduced to new titles. Are you planning to read it? x
