Tropes I Want to See More Of
Well, there are a lot of tropes that I enjoy and look for when I read. Here are six that I’d like to see more of.
1. Slow-Burn Romances
I’m a sucker for a good romance, and slow-burns are my favorites. The build-up, the anticipation, the angst – I just love it! Many of the historical romances I read include this trope, and I always look forward to that part of the story.
2. Strong Sibling Relationships
One of the things I liked most about the book Shielded was the lovely sibling relationships. Jennesara and Enzo’s connections to their siblings is strong and positive. I would love to see more healthy, supportive relationships between siblings, for sure.

3. Supportive (And Living) Parents
Is it me, or are there a lot of dead parents in literature? I feel like this is especially predominant in many of the YA SFF that I read. I want supportive parents, parents that add to the story and character development. Stop killing of the parents. IMO teens have enough problems without having to deal with that kind of loss.
4. Portal/Secondary World
The Green Door is one of my most recent reads with this trope. So is Nora Roberts’ The Awakening, which comes out later this year. Both were great stories! This is a trope that I never tire of, and it remains popular in literature.

5. Morally Grey Characters
I just love exploring morally grey characters and situations. These are characters that aren’t completely good or completely bad. They are flawed, and they don’t always make the right choices. There are shades of grey in every person, and this inner struggle is fascinating.
6. Dragons!!!
I don’t think I’ll every get tired of dragons! They are one of my favorite supernatural creatures.

Thanks! I know, lately, I’ve been loving dragons! I recently read a book with dragon-drawn characters and another where the character had a pet dragon – love it! 🙂

Yes I agree with so many of these. I love a morally grey character and I LOVE a slow burn romance.
Me too – put the two together and my life is complete! lol I recently read Poison & Honey – it has both tropes and it’s set in a fantasy world. All my faves in one. 🙂
I also love books with strong sibling relationships and supportive and living parents!! And dragons, of course!!! Have you read The Priory of the Orange Tree? It has so many amazing dragons 🙂

I’ve read a few fantasy novels lately with morally grey characters, and I love it! Girl, Serpent, Thorn and Poison & Honey come to mind. And you can never go wrong with dragons!! 🙂
I feel morally grey characters make stories more interesting, it’s not just good vs evil – it’s more complex. Humans are more complex. And I love it!

Tale of the Cattail Forest, a book I am writing, has a lot of relationships. a cousin relationship, friendship relationships, uncle/nephew relationship, and a leader’s relationship to the people. I created a Fairy Frog- Aries is leader of the Fairy Frogs- there is that kinda of relationship.
Greatest Discovery, I believe, has a strong sibling relationship. Aurora and Jasmine are two fraternal twins, who were born to a Disney loving and artsy family. These two girls have been best friends since they were born. Jasmine is furiously protective of Aurora. You strongly got to see their relationship unfold after tragedy strikes. While their parents were killed in a car wreck, these two girls somehow survived.
Your story sounds interesting, and I like how it highlights so many wonderful relationships! And the sisterly bond in Greatest Discovery sounds amazing!
