How’d They Get So Smart? Words of Wisdom from Six of Crows

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my third post about the fabulous Six of Crows! I recently did a buddy read with Susan at Novel Lives, and it was so much fun! Susan is a hardcore Six of Crows fan, and her knowledge of the duology is immense. As we chatted, we talked a lot about the characters, the humor, and the relationships. One other topic was all of these epic words of wisdom!!

Six of Crows

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone. . . .

A convict with a thirst for revenge

A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager

A runaway with a privileged past

A spy known as the Wraith

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes

Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.

Leigh Bardugo’s writing style is richly layered, immersive, and poignant. I was moved by so many powerful lines in Six of Crows that I had to make an entire post about it. Initially, I was going to make this a top 10 list, but I couldn’t narrow it down to 10 favorites. lol

Let’s take a look at my 14 favorite words of wisdom from Six of Crows:

Every man is a safe, a vault of secrets and longings.

Kaz

When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.

Kaz

Matthias knew monsters, and one glance at Kaz Brekker had told him that this was a creature who had spent too long in the dark – he’d brought something back with him when he’d crawled into the light.

Matthias

The easiest way to steal a man’s wallet is to tell him you’re going to steal his watch.

Kaz

You couldn’t train a falcon, then expect it not to hunt.

Inej

People love to give up authority to men in nice clothes.

Kaz

Shame holds more value than coin ever can.

Kaz

The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.

Inej

“Nina is everything you say. It’s too much.”

“Mmmm,” Inej murmured, taking a sip from her mug. “Maybe you’re just not enough.”

Matthias & Inej

Better terrible truths than kind lies.

Inej

The autumn leaf might cling to its branch, but it was already dead. The only question was when it would fall.

Inej

If you wanted to kill a vine, you didn’t just keep cutting it back. You tore it from the ground by the roots.

Nina

Greed may do your bidding, but death serves no man.

Kaz

How did these young characters get so profound? I’m amazed by the insight and wisdom they’ve gained in their lives. I think my favorite is, “Better terrible truths than kind lies.” Which one is your favorite? Comment below!

  1. Love this series of blogs with all the quotes! The last quote from Kaz about death is definitely one of my favourites. Kaz had so many good lines. Six of Crows is one of my favourite books and there were so many times I laughed out loud reading it or just thought how good the writing and dialogue were. – Amber

    1. I completely agree – The writing and dialogue are exceptional, and Kaz has some fantastic lines! I can’t wait to see the Netflix series! I hope it stays true to the dialogue, story, and characters!

      1. I’m really looking forward to the Netflix series too! I really like the character casting so far. I’m interested to see how they will combine the two series into one show
