First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

Emma Grant gripped the silk ribbon tied around her sister-in-laws waist while she hastened forward. “You’re walking too fast!”

A plethora of guests crammed the passageway, the boisterousness from their conversations almost deafening. She tightened her fist. “Janet! Did you hear me?”

No reply came as someone shouldered Emma aside, making her lose her grip on the ribbon. A chill pulsed through her blood.

No!

Do you recognize the lines?

Hint: It’s an historical romance by Amy Jarecki.

Still not sure? Here’s another hint:

It’s the 8th book in the series.

The First Lines Friday book is:

Title: The Highland Laird

Author: Amy Jarecki

Series: Lords of the Highlands (Book 8)

Page Length: 352

Publication Date: Oct. 13, 2020

Publisher: Forever

Synopsis: Emma Grant has been sheltered and underestimated her entire life. Her blindness may set her apart, but she’s just as fierce and loyal as any of her clansmen. So when she catches word that her brother’s best friend is in jail, she doesn’t hesitate to race to the brawny Highlander’s rescue.

Laird Ciar MacDougall is on a vital mission for Scotland when he witnesses a murder—and then is blamed for the death and thrown into a Redcoat prison to rot. He never thought he’d be broken out by a slip of a lass and her faithful hound. But now they’re outlaws on the run. And as their enemies circle ever closer, he will have to choose between saving his country or the woman who’s captured his heart.

I recently read The Highland Laird and loved the exceptional characters and the swoon-worthy romance. Though this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.
