My Review:

The first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series, Out of the Storm packed a suspenseful punch with secrets, lies, kidnapping, betrayal, and layers of intrigue. The story follows Kate Jackson, a woman who lost her husband Danny in a work explosion. Though twenty years have passed, Kate never lost hope that Danny might be alive somewhere. Everyone told her to move on, but Kate couldn’t and solely focused on raising her daughters. Now, newly engaged and tentatively starting over with her fiancée Collin, Kate is stunned when she sees a man who looks exactly like Danny.

Jon knows that he is not Kate’s long-lost husband, but his past isn’t clear. What secrets is Jon hiding? And why is Collin so insistent that Jon is not Danny and that he and Kate must leave and cross the Canadian border? Jon might not remember all of his past, but he knows that he must do whatever it takes to protect this lovely woman from danger, even if it means revealing who he is.

I really enjoyed this action-packed, emotion-filled romance. The characters are well-developed, especially Kate, who is a devoted mother, a successful writer, and a strong woman. Kate loves her husband, and her unfailing loyalty and devotion to him are powerful. She loved Danny with everything she had, so when she sees a man that she thinks is Danny, you can imagine the reaction.

Dealing with her conflicting emotions about living in the past or looking toward the future, as well as finding out the true motivations of someone close to her, proves difficult and dangerous. Kate is so torn between her love for her first husband and her future with Collin, especially because she feels deep down that Danny is still alive.

The secondary characters are well-layered too. Jon, the quiet and solitary woodworker who might be Danny, is intriguing, and I was fascinated by his story. Several locals prove loyal and indispensable to Jon’s cause, and I’m eager to see some of these hard-working and helpful people of Buckhorn, Montana in future books in the series.

There are many twists and turns in Out of the Storm, which makes for a gripping and intriguing read. Plus, the love story is fantastic! I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy contemporary romantic suspense with great characters. Thanks so much to Netgalley, Harlequin, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
