Top 10 Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read (and LOVED) in 2020

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

New-to-Me Authors I Read (and LOVED) in 2020

I never thought when I started this blog last year that I would be lucky enough to read so many so many fantastic books, and that I would connect with a bunch of amazing authors! For this post, I’d like to focus mostly on sci-fi/fantasy authors. Let’s check them out! If you want to learn more about a book, click on the image, and it will take you to Goodreads.

1. Kristen Brand

Kristen Brand is a huge nerd. She writes speculative fiction with lots of action, romance, and witty banter. When she’s not writing, she’s usually reading novels or comic books, and she can’t get through the day without at least one cup of tea. You can find out more about her work and read free fiction about everything from lovestruck supervillains to malevolent fairies at her website, KristenBrand.com.

2. Colleen Cowley

1. “Colleen Cowley” is not my normal, everyday name. It is a family name of sorts, though.

2. In my teens, I wrote a really awful high fantasy with a portal and many other clichés. And then I took a novel-writing break that I thought would be permanent.

3. As much as I love The Hobbit, my favorite sort of fantasy is present-day. Because there’s such possibility in the idea that something magical could be happening right under your nose.

4. Regarding No. 3: After I zipped through the first four Harry Potter books and waited impatiently for the fifth, I would occasionally dream I was at Hogwarts.

5. I live with my family beside a possibly magical forest. My wardrobe, though, is perfectly ordinary.

Colleen Cowley writes romantic fantasy in (warped) modern-day settings because, c’mon, who doesn’t secretly wish for some magic in real life?

I Read:

3. Anela Deen

A child of two cultures, this hapa haole Hawaiian girl is currently landlocked in the Midwest. After exploring the world for a chunk of years, she hunkered down in Minnesota and now fills her days with family, fiction, and the occasional snowstorm. With a house full of lovable toddlers, a three-legged cat, and one handsome Dutchman, she prowls the keyboard late at night while the minions sleep. Coffee? Nah, she prefers tea with a generous spoonful of sarcasm.

4. Kalynn Bayron

Kalynn Bayron is the bestselling author of CINDERELLA IS DEAD. She is a classically trained vocalist and when she’s not writing you can find her listening to Ella Fitzgerald on loop, attending the theater, watching scary movies, and spending time with her kids. She currently lives in San Antonio, Texas with her family.

5. Kay L. Moody

Kay L Moody is proud to be a young adult fantasy author. Her books feature exciting plots with a few magical elements. They have lots of adventure, compelling characters, and sweet romantic sub-plots. Most of her books have a dystopian flair. They include a variety of technology levels and lots of diversity in characters.

Kay lives in the western United States with her husband and four sons. She enjoys summertime, learning new things, and doing her nails.

Kay has been writing for years, and in 2018, finally decided it was time to publish. She loves books because they provide an escape from the world. She writes so that her books can provide both entertainment and edification. She believes that no matter how difficult life gets, a happy ending is never permanently out of reach.

I Read:

6. Elizabeth Stephens

Tough heroines & possessive Alphas solve mysteries, fight epic battles, and fall in love in Elizabeth’s diverse romance & SciFi novels.

Elizabeth Stephens has been living in a fantasy world since she was 11, and in 2015 finally translated her imagination to print! An author of romantic suspense and science fiction, she is a big fan of inclusion and her books always include kick ass ladies of color.

When she isn’t found writing, you’ll also see her getting her hands dirty by throwing pottery, or working as a communications consultant for privacy and human rights organizations. With origins in Seattle, Atlanta, and Bamako, she currently lives in Berlin with her loving husband and doggo, King Louis.

I Read:

7. Camille Longley

Camille Longley is the author of the Flameskin Chronicles and the Talons and Teeth series. She grew up in Arizona, graduated from Brigham Young University, and now lives in the Bay Area with her husband and daughter.

8. Nicole Bailey

Nicole Bailey is a writer and reader who loves young adult, magical realism, and the occasional romcom. She writes YA fantasy and published her debut novel (FAYE AND THE ETHER) Fall 2020. When she isn’t writing she loves to hike, kayak, bike, or garden. She lives with her three children and her husband in South Carolina.

I Read:

9. Katie Reus

Katie Reus is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Red Stone Security series, the Redemption Harbor series and the Deadly Ops series. She fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors many times, she finally graduated with a degree in psychology. Not long after that she discovered a new love. Writing. She now spends her days writing paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense.

  1. Cinderella is Dead had been one of my most anticipated book last year and I still haven’t got to it 😣

Other than Kalynn Bayron, all of the other authos are ones I’ve never heard of, which isn’t surprise considering I don’t usually read Sci-Fic and Fantasy. But since I want to try out both the genre, I’ll be checking out some of these authors! 🥺

  2. None of those.

As for my favorite 2020: part aren’t said because I already read them

    1. V.E. Schwab
    2. Thomas Hardy
    3. Howl’s Moving Castle- don’t know who wrote them
4 Okay, this is when it gets tricky- I loved all the short stories and poems in A Christmas Treasury (don’t exactly know the names of the new authors I read in that)

Just what I can think of

  3. Great list!! I loved Cinderella is dead . I actually don’t know a lot of these but they sound really good and I’ve added them to my tbr list

  4. I haven’t read the majority of these authors but Cowley and Stephens were both new-to-me last year and I’m so glad that I discovered them (through you, no less)! 😉 Stephens in particular has gotten me into some romance that I never thought I’d enjoy reading but she makes it work. Hopefully I finally get to Beneath Cruel Fathoms this year!
