First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

Mr. Quincy Nesbitt had suspected his return to London would be painful-that riding down the streets that were at once foreign and familiar would be like tearing open an old wound.

It brought him not an ounce of pleasure to know just how right he had been.

Do you recognize the lines?

Hint: It’s a new book by Christina Britton.

Still not sure? Here’s another hint: It’s the second book in the series.

The First Lines Friday book is:

Someday My Duke Will Come by Christina Britton

Series: Isle of Synne (Book 2)

Page Length: 400

Publication Date: Jan. 26, 2021

Synopsis: Lady Clara Ashford’s world changed fifteen years ago at the hands of a rogue who took her innocence. Determined never to give into temptation again, she settles into a life as caregiver for her family. With her younger sister recently engaged and about to embark on a life of her own, Clara feels adrift and without purpose―until Quincy, the new Duke of Reigate, arrives on her doorstep in need of a fake fiancée.

When Quincy Nesbitt unexpectedly inherits a dukedom, he’s determined to do his best by the title. One thing he won’t do? Marry a woman he’s never met just because she was engaged to his older brother. So, he enlists Lady Clara’s help, since he can’t marry another when he’s engaged to her. But as they pretend for the ton, Quincy finds himself falling for real. Now, he just has to convince Lady Clara to take a chance on him.
