The Knight’s Runaway Maiden is a wonderful enemies-to-lovers historical romance that follows Severine, a woman whose main goal is to protect her sons from her brutal husband and in-laws. She flees and hides with her boys for six years before Balthus, the brother of her husband and the man she once favored, finds her. Balthus always loved Severine, but knew he could not have her. Now his brother’s widow, Severine has the key to ending his family’s control forever. But Severine doesn’t know her husband is dead, and Balthus fears she’ll leave if she finds out? Can Severine and Balthus trust each other? Will they give in to their feelings after secrets and lies are revealed?
An unrequited, forbidden, enemies-to lovers romance, Severine and Balthus are at war with their feelings. They know they shouldn’t care for each other, they don’t fully trust each other, yet they can’t deny the way they feel. So many obstacles stand in their way, including lies, secrets, and fear, but at the forefront is Balthus’s evil, ruthless, and manipulative family. Severine and Balthus both have a lot to work through – Balthus deals with feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness, and Severine is haunted by abuses of the past. Both struggle with trusting others. However, they both also remember when they first met and the way they felt about each other, and as they slowly become reacquainted, their chemistry can’t be denied. Torn between feelings and logic, their budding romance is angst-filled swoon-tasticness!
I also love the secondary characters, including Severine’s sons and the friends who help protect her. Severine’s boys are rambunctious, curious, and super energetic. They are a delight, and it’s clear that they are well loved. Some of the sweetest scenes are with Balthus and the boys, and I think that endears Balthus to Severine even more.
Balthus’s traveling companion Henry is also fantastic, and I enjoyed the witty levity, fierce protectiveness, and impenetrable loyalty he and other characters brought to the story. There is a found family dynamic throughout the novel that unites the characters, which is lovely. Sarah and Imbert and other villagers are people who love and protect each other no matter what, and I’m curious to see how their stories progress in the future books in the series.
Though this is not the first book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. However, I definitely want to go back and read the first book because I really enjoyed this one!
