Top 10 Tuesday: Books I Loved That Made Me Want to Read More Like Them

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic is:

Books I Loved That Made Me Want to Read More Like Them

I am definitely a binge and mood reader. When I find an author that I love, I tend to read all of their books in quick successions. The same goes for genres. I love romance and fantasy and often get caught up in subgenres based on my mood and books that inspire me. Here are some books from the past year that made me want to read more like them:

1. Fable by Adrienne Young

I adored the Fable duology and bought all of Adrienne Young’s books right after I finished reading Fable. I also bought several other YA pirate romances. I’m all for a swashbuckling romance and adventure!! Young has a new book coming out soon that takes place in the same universe as the Fable duology, and I am totally here for it!! It’s called The Last Legacy, and it sounds amazing!!!

To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

2. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

This book! I taught The Odyssey at least twice a year for seventeen years and The Iliad almost as much, so I wasn’t super interested in this book when I first got it. However, a bunch of my blogging friends raved about it, so I gave it a shot. I am so glad i did because I absolutely loved it, and it is now firmly in the top 5 of my favorite all-time reads. This is a beautifully written story that I haven’t stopped talking about since I read it. It also inspired my love of mythological retellings!

Title: The Song of Achilles

Author: Madeline Miller

Page Length: 352

Publication Date: Sept. 20, 2011

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing

Synopsis: Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

9. The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel

After reading The Book of Lost Names, I read about a half dozen more pieces of historical fiction that took place around the same time period. I loved this story and the author’s writing style.

Title: The Book of Lost Names

Author: Kristin Harmel

Page Length: 400

Publication Date: July 21, 2020

Publisher: Gallery Books

Synopsis: Eva Traube Abrams, a semi-retired librarian in Florida, is shelving books one morning when her eyes lock on a photograph in a magazine lying open nearby. She freezes; it’s an image of a book she hasn’t seen in sixty-five years—a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names.

The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II—an experience Eva remembers well—and the search to reunite people with the texts taken from them so long ago. The book in the photograph, an eighteenth-century religious text thought to have been taken from France in the waning days of the war, is one of the most fascinating cases. Now housed in Berlin’s Zentral- und Landesbibliothek library, it appears to contain some sort of code, but researchers don’t know where it came from—or what the code means. Only Eva holds the answer—but will she have the strength to revisit old memories and help reunite those lost during the war?

As a graduate student in 1942, Eva was forced to flee Paris after the arrest of her father, a Polish Jew. Finding refuge in a small mountain town in the Free Zone, she begins forging identity documents for Jewish children fleeing to neutral Switzerland. But erasing people comes with a price, and along with a mysterious, handsome forger named Rémy, Eva decides she must find a way to preserve the real names of the children who are too young to remember who they really are. The records they keep in The Book of Lost Names will become even more vital when the resistance cell they work for is betrayed and Rémy disappears.

An engaging and evocative novel reminiscent of The Lost Girls of Paris and The Alice NetworkThe Book of Lost Names is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of bravery and love in the face of evil.

10. Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft

Worse, Wren’s patient isn’t a servant at all but Hal Cavendish, the infamous Reaper of Vesria and her kingdom’s sworn enemy. Hal also came to Colwick Hall for redemption, but the secrets in the estate may lead to both of their deaths.

With sinister forces at work, Wren and Hal realize they’ll have to join together if they have any hope of saving their kingdoms. But as Wren circles closer to the nefarious truth behind Hal’s illness, they realize they have no escape from the monsters within the mansion.
