My Review:

This is the third book in the Heir of Blood and Fire series, and it picks up right where it left off in the second book. It’s such an immersive read that pulls you in right from the beginning. Two men in Calla’s life are captured by Roehl, and Calla is desperate to save them. She’s also learning to use her powers, and dealing with some unexpected twists and turns. Calla and the others are also preparing for what is bound to be an epic battle between good and evil, all while other obstacles are continually thrown their way.

Calla goes through so much in this story, and she rarely has a moment to even process what has happened to her. This book shows a lot of Calla’s emotional journey, and there is a ton of angst, especially considering her most important relationships are threatened. She is fiercely determined and so committed to defeating Roehl. However, her journey is dark and dangerous, and she can never let her guard down. Her character arc is developed well, and she has come a long way from her initial introverted and reserved self.

Confident and brave, Calla works hard to master her abilities, which will aid her in defeating Roehl. I loved these scenes! Her powers are so unique, and she gets help from several friends to learn everything she can. I also love how Calla’s friends, new and old, support her throughout the story. They stand by her during some really difficult moments, and I think their unwavering support helps Calla deal with everything that’s happening. Her friends have a way of knowing when Calla needs a distraction, when she needs to wallow, and when she needs to fight. Yet, among the horrific loss and grief (and crying – there’s a lot of crying), Calla also experiences hope and friendship.

Of course, my favorite part of the story (and most stories) is the romance. The chemistry between Calla and Trystan is everything! Their relationship is really put to the test in this book, and Calla’s helplessness and desperation are at the forefront of the story. I don’t want to give too much away about this part of the story, but the author really shows how deeply Trystan and Calla feel for each other. Despite all of the challenges they face, they continue to fight for each other. I loved this couple from the beginning, and I am so hoping that they have a happy ending. (If not, there are others who will gladly take Trystan’s place).

Overall, this is an engrossing addition to the series, and I’m eagerly anticipating the fourth book! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Calla, Trystan, and the others as their stories continue. Thanks so much to Cameo Renae and The Next Step PR for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Favorite Quotes:

I was sick of being in the shadows. I was meant to be in the light.

Even if threatened, we cannot be fearful to stand up for what we believe is right

I am fire. I am water. I am earth. I am air. And I am worthy.

Recommendations:

Be sure to check the trigger warnings before you start this story/series. This is a dark-ish fantasy with death, kidnapping, abuse, violence, torture, and more which may trigger some readers.
