Hey there! Today, I have another Loving the Lines for you! Basically, Loving the Lines is dedicated to books with stand-out quotes that need to be shared. I’m often moved by passages and lines from the books I read, and I thought this would be a great way to show the love!! Many thanks to all the wonderful writers who inspire, empower, entertain, and make people think. Today, that author and book is:

Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune

About the Book:

Page Length: 384

Publication Date: Sept. 21, 2021

Publisher: Tor Books

Synopsis: When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead.

Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village. On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo. Hugo is the tea shop’s owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over.

But Wallace isn’t ready to abandon the life he barely lived. With Hugo’s help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed in life.

When the Manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days.

By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune’s signature warmth, humor, and extraordinary empathy.

I recently read and loved Under the Whispering Door! It was my first read by T.J. Klune, and I was completely blown away. It’s one of those books that stays with you long after you finish reading it, and there are so many powerful, thought-provoking moments. When creating this post, I found it hard to narrow down my favorite lines – there are so many good ones, but I managed to narrow it down to my top 15 faves. Let’s take a look at these fabulous stand-out quotes from the book!

Favorite Lines:

About Life:

The first time you share tea, you are a stranger. The second time you share tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share tea, you become family.

It helps to laugh, even when you don’t feel like laughing.

What will you do with the time you have left?

When was the last time you ever did anything without expecting something in return?

Hindsight is a powerful thing, Wallace. We don’t always see what’s right in front of us, much less to appreciate it. It’s not until we look back that we find what we should have known all along.

I’d hate to know everything. There’d be no mystery left. What would be the point?

I won’t have you thinking I’m a perfect man. It would be a lie. But I’ve learned that maybe I was a better person than I expected. I think that’s all anyone can ask for.

I know faith is hard, especially in the face of the unknown. But I have faith in you.

Sometimes the best way to help someone is not to say anything at all.

About Anxiety:

If we worry about the little things all the time, we run the risk of missing the bigger things.

Anxiety is…a betrayal, my brain and body working against me.

About Death:

Death isn’t a final ending, Wallace. It’s an ending, sure, but only to prepare you for a new beginning.

Bravery meant the possibility of death. And wasn’t that funny? Because it took being dead for Wallace to finally be brave.

We live and we breathe. We die, and we still feel like breathing. It’s not always the big deaths either. There are little deaths, because that’s what grief is.

It’s never enough, is it? Time. We always think we have so much of it, but when it really counts, we don’t have enough at all.

  1. Incorrect quote above. It should be “There would be no mystery left”, instead of “history left”
