Top Ten Tuesday: Authors I Haven’t Read But Want To

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic is:

Authors I Haven’t Read But Want To

1. Chloe Gong

These Violent Delights and and Our Violent Ends is at the top of my TBR pile. The more I hear about this duology, the more I want to read it!

About the Author: Chloe Gong is the New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights and its sequel Our Violent Ends. She is a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she double-majored in English and International Relations. Born in Shanghai and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Chloe is now located in New York pretending to be a real adult. You can find her on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok under @thechloegong.

2. Staci Hart

Staci Hart writes contemporary romance and rom-coms, and the stories sound super cute. I especially want to read The Bennett Brothers series, which is a spin on the Bennett’s from Pride and Prejudice.

About the Author: I was the kid who stayed inside to read.

As a four-eyed nerd with a bad perm, I was no one’s dodgeball pick, but I had a lot of friends. Frodo and Bilbo, for instance. Kristy, Stacey, Claudia and the gang (iykyk). Once, in the third grade, I wrote a teen murder mystery inspired by Christopher Pike. On solving my mystery in twelve pages, I decided I was a terrible writer and should never, ever do that again.

Fortunately, I didn’t take my own advice.

I write romance for that feeling you get at the end, like you’re standing on top of a mountain with a backpack full of hundred dollar bills. I write romcoms because is there anything better than banter and grand gestures? I write because I love to create and I love words. I love books, and I love stretching my imagination. I love love, and if you do too, bring your coffee and have a seat. I think we’re gonna be friends.

3. Kerri Maniscalco

I’ve heard so many fantastic things about Kerri Maniscalo’s writing, especially her Kingdom of the Wicked series and her Stalking Jack the Ripper series. I definitely want to check both out!

About the Author: I’m mostly on Instagram–where I’m always ready to talk fictional crushes and nerd out over books. (Okay, okay. And I’ve also been known to share snippets and teasers from my upcoming novels, if you’re into that sort of thing…) Please feel free to chat with me there @KerriManiscalco. I love talking with fellow readers!

Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside NYC where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life’s finer points with her cats.

She is the NYT and USA Today bestselling author of the STALKING JACK THE RIPPER quartet. The final installment, CAPTURING THE DEVIL, will be released on 9/10/19. KINGDOM OF THE WICKED, the first in a new YA fantasy series, is slated for fall 2020.

4. Naomi Novik

Novik wrote Spinning Silver and Uprooted, and I’ve heard great things about both.

About the Author: An avid reader of fantasy literature since age six, when she first made her way through The Lord of the Rings, Naomi Novik is also a history buff with a particular interest in the Napoleonic era and a fondness for the work of Patrick O’Brian and Jane Austen. She studied English literature at Brown University, and did graduate work in computer science at Columbia University before leaving to participate in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadow of Undrentide. Over the course of a brief winter sojourn spent working on the game in Edmonton, Canada (accompanied by a truly alarming coat that now lives brooding in the depths of her closet), she realized she preferred writing to programming, and on returning to New York, decided to try her hand at novels.

Naomi lives in New York City with her husband and six computers. Her website is at naominovik.com

5. Tessa Bailey

Hook, Line, and Sinker has been all over social media lately, and it sounds like a swoon-worthy contemporary romance! I heard the same about It Happened One Summer. This is an author I need to read sooner rather than later!

About the Author: New York Times Bestselling author Tessa Bailey can solve all problems except for her own, so she focuses those efforts on stubborn, fictional blue collar men and loyal, lovable heroines. She lives on Long Island avoiding the sun and social interactions, then wonders why no one has called. Dubbed the “Michelangelo of dirty talk,” by Entertainment Weekly, Tessa writes with spice, spirit, swoon and a guaranteed happily ever after. Catch her on TikTok at @authortessabailey or check out tessabailey.com for a complete list of books.

6. Intisar Khanani

The moment I saw the cover of Thorn, I wanted to read the book. It’s gorgeous, and the story sounds so intriguing! One of my book buddies recommended the series, and we like a lot of the same books, so I have a feeling I’ll enjoy this one.

About the Author: Intisar Khanani grew up a nomad and world traveler. Born in Wisconsin, she has lived in five different states as well as in Jeddah on the coast of the Red Sea. She currently resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and two young daughters. Prior to publishing her novels, Intisar worked as a public health consultant on projects relating to infant mortality and minority health, which was as close as she could get to saving the world. Now she focuses her time on her two passions: raising her family and writing fantasy.

Intisar is the author of the Dauntless Path books (Thorn, The Theft of Sunlight), and her indie epic fantasy series, The Sunbolt Chronicles.

7. Alexis Daria

You Had Me at Hola and A Lot Like Adios both sound like fabulous rom-coms, and I’ve already bought both of them. I’m hoping to get to them next month as part of my Beat the Backlist challenge.

About the Author: Alexis Daria writes stories about successful Latinx characters and their (occasionally messy) familias. You Had Me at Hola, the first book in her Primas of Power series, is a national bestseller. Alexis is a lifelong New Yorker who loves Broadway musicals and pizza.

8. Silvia Moreno-Garcia

When Mexican Gothic first released, readers raved about Morena-Garcia’s writing. I still haven’t read anything by the author, but I have an ARC of The Daughter of Doctor Moreau and am hoping to read it soon.

About the Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of several novels, including Velvet Was the Night, Mexican Gothic, Gods of Jade and Shadow and Untamed Shore. She has also edited a number of anthologies, including the World Fantasy Award-winning She Walks in Shadows (a.k.a. Cthulhu’s Daughters). Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination.

9. Elise Kova

How have I not read anything by Elise Kova? I love romantasy! It’s my favorite genre, and so many of my friends have recommended the author. I even bought a copy of Air Awakens but still haven’t read it.

About the Author: Join Elise’s mailing list to never miss a giveaway, release, sale, and more: https://elisekova.com/subscribe/

ELISE KOVA is a USA Today bestselling author. She enjoys telling stories of fantasy worlds filled with magic and deep emotions. She lives in Florida and, when not writing, can be found playing video games, drawing, chatting with readers on social media, or daydreaming about her next story.

10. Pat Barker

Barker wrote two Greek myth retelling that I really want to read – The Silence of the Girls and The Women of Troy. I own both and am determined to read them by the end of 2022.

About the Author: Pat Barker, CBE, FRSL was born in Thornaby-on-Tees in 1943. She was educated at the London School of Economics and has been a teacher of history and politics.

Her books include the highly acclaimed Regeneration trilogy RegenerationThe Eye in the Door, winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize; and The Ghost Road, winner of the Booker Prize; as well as seven other novels. She’s married and lives in Durham, England.

  1. I have only read one of these authors, Tessa Bailey. The others are not authors I have familiar with. I hope you enjoy them all when you get to them, Julie.

  2. I’ve read the first Chloe Gong book and really enjoyed it. Pat Barker is just an amazing author. Hope you get to read some of these soon

    1. I’m starting it tomorrow!! I taught Romeo and Juliet more times than I can count, and I have a love-hate relationship with it. lol But this sounds sooo good!!

  3. There are so many great authors on here. Dini and I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and loved it! Mexican Gothic was good but too scary for me! lol Totally get how people loved it though. You should read These Violent Delights and then join Dini and I, for Our Violent Ends next month!! Elisa Kova is one I would like to read someday too!

  4. Tessa Bailey and Staci Hart are fun authors. I actually like some of Bailey’s other books better than this series, but it’s really hyped right now.

  5. I love your picks! I’ve always wanted to read a chloe gong book (I guess I’m just kinda intimidated because there are so many of them lol). I really enjoyed kingdom of the wicked, hope you do too if you get round to it! Here’s my TTT of the week, it was a quiz on fantasy books, see how many you know! 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2022/04/12/ttt-12-4-22-can-you-guess-what-urban-fantasy-books-these-words-are-from/

  6. You’ve got some really awesome authors on here, ones that I loved their books – Pat Barker, Kerri Maniscalco, Chloe Gong, Naomi Novik, and Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

  7. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed 1,3 &5. 8 &9 are high on my want to read list. I have started one of Hart’s P&P retellings, but I haven’t made it far yet.

  8. I am actually surprised that I have read most of the authors on this list and now need to read the others. From the ones that I have read, it is difficult to select only one. I think I would go with Intisar Khanani as the Dauntless Path series is like two in one as Thorn features one main character and the following two novels have a new main character where the one from Thorn is now a secondary character. While the third novel is not released yet, the first two definitely made my re-read list. 🙂

  9. Ooh, this is such a great list, Julie! A few of these are new to me as well and I have a few of their books on my TBR (like Hart’s Bennet Brothers series and Khanani’s books). Bailey isn’t new to me but I defo want to read her newer contemporaries. I hope you enjoy all these authors and their books whenever you get to them 😍

  10. Uprooted is one of my favorite books <3 So I hope you like her books! (I didn't really care for Spinning Silver, but we are reading His Majesty's Dragon for my book club this month and I am beyond excited!)
