Synopsis: Channeling Indiana Jones, New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin pairs a woman in search of her family’s truth with a hard-hitting professional treasure hunter for the second Blood Ties romantic thriller. As an unknown assailant stalks then across the treacherous Sierra Madre wilderness, they race to follow their treasure map’s directions to a hidden trove of gold…

A novel of taut suspense and danger from the New York Times bestselling mistress of Romantic Thrillers, Kat Martin.

When Abigail Holland awakes to the sound of a nighttime intruder in her rambling Denver Victorian, she knows exactly what the black shrouded figure is after—the map she recently inherited from her grandfather. Whoever he is, the man who grapples with her, then escapes, is willing to kill for the location of a treasure King Farrell hunted for more than ten years. The Devil’s Gold has claimed hundreds of lives, and it was her grandfather’s obsession.

With a killer pursuing her and her own family not to be trusted, Abby decides to take up the search herself. But she’ll need help to do it, and there’s no one better than renowned explorer and treasure hunter Gage Logan. Despite the instant chemistry between them, Gage is reluctant. Innocent people have been hurt on his watch before. But when Abby shows him a genuine gold ingot she found with the map, his curiosity is piqued. Before long they’re heading into the flash floods and brutal winds of the Superstition Mountains, straight into a passionate entanglement—and the dark heart of danger.

My Review:

An exciting romantic suspense, The Last Mile follows Abby Holland and Gage Logan as they hunt for a lost treasure worth hundreds of millions of dollars. When Abby inherits a map from her grandfather that could lead to immense wealth, Abby’s life becomes endangered.  So, Abby hires Gage Logan, a respected explorer and treasure hunter to help her find The Devil’s Gold, a treasure her grandfather searched for for years.

Gage and Abby have an instant connection, but Gage learned from past mistakes never to mix business with pleasure. As their journey becomes increasingly dangerous, Gage and Abby must find the elusive Devil’s Gold, avoid the targets on their backs, deal with their ever-growing feelings, and redeem her grandfather’s good name?

This was an engaging and suspenseful read with great characters and a wonderful romance.  I love romances with a treasure hunting component, and Abby and Gabe’s excursions are rife with adventure, danger, and passion. Abby and Gage go on an epic journey – think National Treasure with more romance!! Their journey is exciting and dangerous, as nature and man test them at every turn.  It’s an intriguing adventure with many heart-pounding moments.

Gage and Abby make a good team.  They are both independent, intelligent, and capable, and they work together well. Plus, they have amazing chemistry!! However, fears that stem from past tragedies and heartaches stop the couple from acting on their feelings, and they try to keep things strictly professional.  Gage in particular has some guilt that haunts him and prevents him from committing to one person.  Deep-seated fears limit his romantic relationships, and he has to face some of these issues if he wants a future with Abby.

Abby knows of Gage’s reputation with women and wants more than a fling.  She also fears that she is putting his life in unnecessary danger, and though she has admired him for years, so hesitates to act on her impulses. Through it all, they are drawn to each other, and their relationship grows as they learn to trust and depend on each other. They are both layered characters, complex and dynamic, and their romance is filled with sexual tension, angst, and passion.

I also liked the secondary characters and am eager to learn more about several of them.  Though several were protagonists in earlier books in the series, I have a feeling that several of Gabe’s other friends, brother, and colleagues will be the focus of future books in the series (fingers crossed!).  I believe Gage’s brother Edge is the focus of the next story. He is an enigmatic character, and I can’t wait to read his story!

I’m enjoying this series, as I enjoy all of Martin’s books, and I like that, though the characters are connected, their journeys and situations are all unique.  The stories are engaging, the characters are compelling, and the romances are fantastic!! The Last Mile is no exception. I’m so thankful to Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book, and I would definitely recommend it to readers of romance and romantic suspense.
