My Review:

When Melissa Oliver offered me a chance to read an advanced copy of The Stolen Knight’s Kiss, the second book in the fabulous Protectors of the Crown series, I jumped at the chance. I adored A Defiant Maiden’s Knight and couldn’t wait to read this one.

Oliver writes such brilliant historical romances with a storytelling style that immerses you into the story from the very first lines. I immediately became attached to Nicholas D’Amberley, a Protector of the Crown who has an important pouch stolen from him. The story sweeps you into the time period and the characters’ lives with vivid descriptions, amazing dialogue and banter, and a ton of suspense.

When Eva steals a pouch from an unsuspecting man, she has no idea it contains important information for the Knights Fortitude, a group she suspects killed her father figure and mentor. But when the handsome and mysterious Nicholas catches her, Eva becomes embroiled in a secret group tasked with protecting the crown. Nicholas is drawn to Eva from the start, but can he trust this thief with his secrets and his heart? Can this Eva and Nicholas put their misgivings, as well as their growing feelings for each other, aside to work together and protect the crown?

Eva is loyal and fierce and brave, and she proves she is much more than a criminal. She has fought her entire life to protect herself, and she is wise beyond her years in many ways. Nicholas has devoted his life to protecting England and the king, and his life revolves around his work. They come from very different worlds, and they are often on opposite sides of the law. But, though they are opposites in many ways, they are alike too. They’re both strong and protective and fierce, and they don’t buckle to the whims of society or their peers. Both have family struggles in their respective pasts, and both are slow to trust. They also have amazing chemistry, and the sexual tension between them is strong.

Nicholas is so taken with Eva, though she fails to see it. How could a knight, a protector of the realm, care for a thief? The phrase “love knows no bounds” totally applies to Nicholas and Eva. They make such a great team, both personally and in investigations. Their banter is on point, and all of their interactions are filled with sexual tension and chemistry. I loved their love story, and there are so many super swoon-worthy scenes that show just how much they are growing to care for each other!

The story is suspenseful as Eva and Nicholas work to uncover secret messages and get to the bottom of a nefarious plot that threatens the crown. It’s intriguing and exciting, and Eva learns a lot about the life and death of her mentor, as well as the role of Nicholas and the other protectors. I like that the main characters in A Defiant Maiden’s Knight have ample roles in this one. Seeing how they fare and how their relationships have grown and changed is a delight! And Eva has a friend who is also rather intriguing. I’m curious to see if she and one of Nicholas’s colleagues are in the next story. There’s definitely something happening between them, and I so want to learn more about them!

I’m loving this series, as I’ve loved all of Melissa Oliver’s historical romances. There’s so much intrigue and suspense, and the romance is wonderful. If you’re looking for a swoon-worthy historical romance, you should totally check this one out. And though it’s the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

Special thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own

For too long the need to find what needs to be found, seek what needs to be sought and accomplish what I must has been my dogged aim, without a care or thought of any consequences. But, of course, there are always consequences.’
