About the Book:

Title: Witcha Gonna Do?

Author: Avery Flynn

Series: Witchington

Page Length: 336

Publication Date: Dec. 6, 2022

Publisher: Berkley

Synopsis: Could it possibly get any worse than having absolutely no magical abilities when you’re a member of the most powerful family of witches ever? It used to be that I’d say no, but then I keep getting set up on dates with Gil Connolly whose hotness is only matched by his ego. Seriously. I can’t stand him. Even if I also can’t stop thinking about him (specifically kissing him) but we’re going to pretend I never told you that part.

So yeah, my life isn’t the greatest right now, but then it goes straight to the absolute worst hell when I accidentally make my sister’s spell glitch and curse my whole family. And the only person who can help non-magical me break the spell? You guessed it. Gil the super hot jerk.

Now we have to work together to save my family and outmaneuver some evil-minded nefarious forces bent on world domination. Oh yeah, and we have to do all that while fighting against the attraction building between us because I may not be magical, but what’s happening between Gil and I sure feels like it.

My Review:

Witcha Gonna Do is the first book in Avery Flynn’s Witchinton series. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I liked the characters, the humor, and the supernatural elements. I thought the premise was intriguing too. On the other hand, I wanted…more.

The book as a whole was fun and entertaining, and I liked the premise a lot. I also liked that there was so much humor throughout the story. There were some comments and scenes that had me laughing out loud. Tilda, in particular, has a great sense of humor. However, I wish the characters, romance, and world-building had more depth. I wanted to know more about the unique world and the people who inhabited it. This is the first book in the series, so I have a feeling some of these elements will be developed more in the next books. The narrative style also kind of bothered me. I’m not a fan of narrators who talk to the reader. Breaking down the fourth wall works in some instances. In this case, it was a bit off-putting for me.

Tilda is an interesting protagonist. She’s a witch from a super powerful family, yet she has no powers (that she knows of). She is part of a magical misfits support group, and she is shocked when she accidentally curses her whole family. Unfortunately, to break the curse Tilda has to work with a man who irritates and annoys her. Gil knows Tilda is hiding her power, and he is tasked with figuring out what her power is. He has an interesting back story too, though I wish we learned more about it.

The romance between Tilda and Gil went from enemies-to-lovers to insta-love rather quickly, which surprised me, especially considering how much animosity Tilda felt towards Gil at the start. That being said, their romantic scenes are pretty sexy, and their chemistry is fantastic.

I think readers who are looking for a quick and light paranormal romance with a different narrative style might enjoy Witcha Gonna Do. Thanks to Berkeley Books for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
