Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic:
Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors Discovered in 2023
1. Andrea Stewart
Andrea Stewart is the Chinese American daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Her parents always emphasized science and education, so she spent her childhood immersed in Star Trek and odd-smelling library books. When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn’t pan out, she instead turned to writing books. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes.

2. Rebecca Ross

Rebecca Ross is the #1 New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of fantasy books for teens and adults.
She has written multiple highly acclaimed duologies, including LETTERS OF ENCHANTMENT, ELEMENTS OF CADENCE, and THE QUEEN’S RISING as well as two standalone novels: DREAMS LIE BENEATH and SISTERS OF SWORD & SONG.
When not writing, she can be found in her garden where she plants wildflowers and story ideas. She resides in Northeast Georgia with her husband and her dog.

3. M.A. Carrick
M.A. Carrick is the joint pen name of Marie Brennan(author of the Memoirs of Lady Trent) and Alyc Helms (author of the Adventures of Mr. Mystic). The two met in 2000 on an archaeological dig in Wales and Ireland — including a stint in the town of Carrickmacross — and have built their friendship through two decades of anthropology, writing, and gaming. They live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

4. Sharon Emmerichs

Sharon Emmerichs was born in Sweden to American parents and grew up in Wisconsin near Lake Michigan. She confounded her kindergarten teachers by showing up to school able to read and has spent most of her life with her nose in a book and a pen in her hand. She has been a writer all her life, from the time she scribbled “words” and pictures on pieces of paper, stapled them together, and called it a book. Her love of stories later translated into an English degree, and then she went on to get her MA and PhD in medieval and early modern literature…and because she collects degrees the way some people collect stamps or baseball cards, she will soon graduate with her creative writing MFA in fiction. She currently teaches Shakespeare and early British literature to university students in beautiful Alaska, where she lives with Juneau, the derpiest Siberian husky ever.

5. Sara Hashem

Sara Hashem is the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Jasad Heir. An American-Egyptian writer from Southern California, she spent many sunny days holed up indoors with a book. Sara’s love for fantasy and magical realms emerged during the two years her family lived in Egypt. When she isn’t busy naming stray cats in her neighborhood after her favorite authors, Sara can be found buried under coffee-ringed notebooks.

6. Costanza Casati

Costanza Casati was born in Texas in 1995 and grew up in a village in Northern Italy, where she studied Ancient Greek, and Ancient Greek literature, under one of the country’s most rigorous academic programmes. She is a graduate of the prestigious Warwick Writing MA in the UK, and worked as a screenwriter and journalist. Clytemnestra is her debut novel. It has sold into 18 territories worldwide, is a Saturday Times bestseller, and was shortlisted for the HWA Debut Crown Award.

7. Liana De La Rosa

Liana De la Rosa is a historical romance author who writes diverse characters in the Regency and Victorian periods. Liana is a graduate of the University of Arizona, and in her past life she owned a mystery shopping company and sold pecans for a large farm. When she’s not writing, Liana is listening to true crime podcasts and pretending she’s a domestic goddess while she wrangles her spirited brood of children with her patient husband in Arizona.

8. H.M. Long

Hannah (H. M.) Long is a Canadian writer who loves history, hiking, and travel. She inhabits a ramshackle cabin in Ontario with her husband and dog, but she can often be spotted snooping about museums or wandering the Alps.
Hannah writes for Titan Books and debuted with HALL OF SMOKE, followed by its companion novel TEMPLE OF NO GOD, and a stand-alone set in the same world, BARROW OF WINTER. A fourth book set in the Hall of Smoke world, PILLAR OF ASH, is slated for release early 2024.
She is also the author of DARK WATER DAUGHTER, a swashbuckling gunpowder fantasy set in an original world of weather witches, warring fleets and winter seas. DARK WATER DAUGHTER will be released July 2023, and its sequel BLACK TIDE SON will follow July 2024.

9. Remi Carrington
Remi Carrington is the figment of Pamela Humphrey’s imagination. She loves romance & chocolate, enjoys disappearing into a delicious book, and considers people-watching a sport. She was born in the pages of the novel Just You and then grew into an alter ego. She writes sweet romance set in Texas. Her books are part of the Phrey Press imprint.

10. Laurel Black

Laurel Black is an author and photographer. She loves creating visually-striking fantasy worlds with breathtaking magic and thrilling adventure. Growing up, she was more inclined to play outdoors than stay inside and read until she was given The Hobbit. This was when she discovered the true power of books to transport you to another world and where her love of fantasy novels began.
When not writing or behind a camera, you can find Laurel on a walk in the woods, searching town for the best vegan desserts, or reading novels that have happy endings.
She lives in Nashville with her husband and their rescue dogs, Parker and Sable, who also both like a good adventure and would probably like hobbits too if they met them.
