These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
About the Book:
Title: These Violent Delights
Author: Chloe Gong
Series: These Violent Delights #1
Page Length: 449
Publication Date: Nov. 17, 2020

Synopsis: The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.
But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

I’m going to try to read this duology this summer!
That’s great! I hope you enjoy it when you read it!
I’ve seen this book a lot but I’m a bit nervous about picking it up! I’m definitely not an expert on this period of Chinese history but I do know a bit about it. I’ve heard from some people the history is treated excellently and the author did her research, but I’ve seen others say it was a bit sketchy, so…
Hmmmm. I don’t know enough to have an opinion, but the story is really intriguing!
I finished this book recently and, if I’m brutally honest, I found it rather underwhelming. I felt it tried to do too many things at once and, as a result, nothing got the attention it needed.
Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it.
