The Dark Lord’s Guide to Honeymooning is such a fun sequel, and I’m really enjoying this unique romantasy and it’s dark humor and vibes! I loved watching Arabella step into her power and new role as the Dark Lady. Kaz remains as villainous and swoon-worthy as ever, and their relationship and story went in directions I didn’t expect. It made for an entertaining read!
Arabella and Kaz continue to be fabulous protagonists, and I like how much Arabella is owing her villainous side. Though often ruthless, she’s also shows a softer, compassionate, and fair side, too. She’s a good complement to Kaz, who is still very much a villain. lol He does some pretty vicious things, but there’s also more tender and vulnerable side of him. I think learning more about what happened to each of them in the past and how it all ties into the present added depth and layers to their characters and relationships. Their romance is my favorite part of the story. No shock there! lol They have amazing chemistry, and their banter is so good! The dialogue throughout is fantastic, and not just with Arabella and Kaz. The way the dialogue adds layers to the characters, plot, and relationships while showing such emotional depth, humor, and tone of the scene is definitely one of the strengths of the novel.
I also loved the found family and the fact that Arabella found this sense of belonging among people who are supposed to be the villains. She, Kaz, Vex, Griffin, Thorne, and Sebastian are the best. And Nyx, the most petulant pink-scaled dragon ever. Love! Sebastian was interesting since he’s a hero among villains and grapples with his beliefs, feelings, and allegiance. And he is not just any hero. He’s gorgeous, he loves to cook, and he makes delicious scones. I can understand why Kaz might feel a little jealous, especially since Sebastian has ties to Arabella. lol Each character is distinctly developed with strong voices and arcs.
Overall, I thought this was an entertaining sequel. I loved the character development, the world-building, the romance, and the humor. I did feel like there were a couple of parts in the middle that felt a little slow. That being said, I loved how the lighter, almost rom-com feel of the story is balanced with the darker and more intense fantasy elements. There were parts that had me laughing out loud, parts that were more serious and emotional moments, some spicy times, twists, and super suspenseful, action-packed scenes that kept me invested.
