Synopsis: Sometimes you have to run away to find yourself

Reeling from the sudden loss of her older sister―her only family―Addie May flees Los Angeles without a plan or a destination, and ends up in Georgetown, Texas. Lost and alone, she’s taken in by some kind local ranchers, and there she meets farm hand Zac Ryan, who starts to cut through the grief and pain and show Addie that she has something to live for.

But the small town holds more than just a fresh start for Addie. Fate has brought her face-to-face with a piece of her past, and she can no longer ignore the parts of herself she thought she’d left behind. Without knowing what’s on the horizon, Addie must find the strength to move towards her dreams. Because healing happens when you let love in, and life happens when you start living it.

My Review:

This is an immersive and moving story of grief, resilience, and finding love, and it captivated me from the very first page.  The story follows Addie through an emotional journey of grief, heartache, and self-discovery after losing her beloved sister. It’s poignant and relatable, and there were many moments where I felt myself choking up because I totally understood what Addie was going through. Grief can be all-consuming, and moving on or finding joy is sometimes difficult. Marley explored these complex layers incredibly well. Addie goes through it, but her road to healing and finding herself again is inspiring.

Though the plot is about Addie’s life after the loss of her sister, the story recounts Addie’s past with her sister, too, which I really liked. It paints such a clear picture of their relationship and makes Addie’s loss even more staggering. They were so close and were such a strong unit that it’s easy to see why Addie’s life comes to a halt when she loses Margo. She is a layered and dynamically developed protagonist, and I feel like we get to see so many sides to her over the course of her journey.

I love stories set in small towns and the feeling of community and support that often come with it.  Georgetown is the perfect place for Addie to settle as she heals.  This quiet and laid-back setting stands in stark contrast to the Los Angeles setting Addie is used to, and it’s a great change for her emotional well-being. And Raine, Zac, Milo, Willa, and others welcome her so willingly and wholly into their fold.

And Zac? Talk about a great book boyfriend! I loved him.  He’s so much more than the rude grump he initially seems to be. He’s so patient and kind, and some of his romantic gestures were positively swoon-worthy. He’s the perfect mix of strong and sensitive, and the way he loves Addie unconditionally makes my heart melt. Plus, the sexy times were pretty steamy!

I thought this was a great read, and there were a couple of twists I definitely didn’t expect. Love that! I didn’t know going in how emotional the story would be, but it affected me in ways I didn’t expect. I would suggest checking out the content warnings before reading, as the story explores topics including infertility, death, grief, pregnancy, and more. Thanks so much to Wattpad Books for sending me a copy of the book.  All thoughts are my own.
