Book Reviews: Fallen by Kat Kinney & Arresting Alan by Amber Daulton

Fallen:

Title: Fallen

Author: Kat Kinney

Series: Everwood Falls

Page Length: 265

Publication Date: April 9, 2024

Synopsis: EVERWOOD FALLS… a small supernatural community tucked up in the Colorado Rockies where witches, werewolves and vampires can live without fear of discovery, and those with curses they can’t control are sent to keep the existence of magic from being revealed to Mundanes.

Once one of thousands of angels who fought against the Underworld at the command of the Archangels, Lucien Girard had his wings broken as punishment for defying angelic law. His crime? Trying to change the fate of the human woman he’d fallen in love with. Centuries later, he bears the curse the Archangels handed down… To fall in love again and again, each time with a new woman who shares the face of the soulmate he failed to save thousands of years before. When Dr. Isabel Romero moves to Everwood Falls, Lucien vows to stay as far away from her as possible, not knowing any other way to prevent her death like all the others who have come before her. But someone from Isabel’s past is stalking her and Lucien can’t simply leave her to her fate. He knows this time will be no different. And yet he refuses to let her go.

Dr. Isabel Romero lives with guilt for the people she’s harmed. The night she died, her life was saved by Costa, a vampire who changed her into one of the undead. But becoming a vampire meant she had to leave her parents behind, only visiting once per year according to vampire law so no one would notice that she isn’t aging. Gifted with a rare healing magic, she saves lives that are beyond her abilities to heal as a doctor. Moving to Everwood Falls is supposed to be a fresh start, but her magic has a dark side and someone from her past is hunting her. The last thing she wants is to be responsible for someone else getting hurt, and that means she can’t allow anyone to get close to her. But she’s going to need Lucien Girard’s help if they’re going to catch the person harming patients in Everwood Falls before someone is seriously hurt.

With a herd of enchanted elk, carnivorous spruce trees, and sentient pumpkins that stalk the local landscaping, Everwood Falls is a quirky mountain town where scales and fur mean found family.

My Review:

Fallen is the second book in the Everwood Falls series, and I was really excited to read it after enjoying the first book, Light My Pyre, last year. I couldn’t wait to go back to Everwood Falls, a magical town literally and figuratively, and found myself quickly immersed in the setting and Lucien’s and Isabel’s story.

Lucien is a fallen angel who was punished for trying to save his love’s life. Now, destined to fall in love and watch her die over and over again through the centuries, it wasn’t surprising to see him fall for Isobel so quickly. Isabel is a doctor and vampire new to Everwood Falls, and she’s struggling with the fact that she can’t see her mother as much as she’d like since she doesn’t age and the supernatural world is a secret. They are both compelling characters, and they have fantastic chemistry!

Everwood Falls almost takes on a life of its own in this series, and I love the rich details and vivid descriptions of the town. A safe haven for supernaturals, it’s one of my favorite parts of the book. Carniverous trees, sentient pumpkins, enchanted animals, many different supernaturals, interesting shops, and more make this unique town come alive.

The mystery behind who’s harming patients of Everwood Falls, as well as a possible threat from Isabel’s past, add a nice dash of suspense to the paranormal romance. And I like that the MCs from the first book have secondary roles in this one, and that there are hints of future protagonists, too. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Thanks to Kat Kinney for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

After he agrees to assist a drug lord-turned-snitch and hack into a criminal database, he’s faced with an impossible challenge—keeping his hands and heart away from his sexy as sin bodyguard, DEA Special Agent Hannah Adler.

Hannah would rather go hand-to-hand with an assailant than go undercover as Alan’s girlfriend, but she’s determined to keep him safe and his illegal activities on the down-low. The handsome man and his adorable child, however, are more than she bargained for.

Once their enemies learn the truth and retaliate by kidnapping Alan’s son, they’ll have to race against the clock to save the boy and bring a dangerous empire to its knees.

My Review:

This is the fourth and final book in the Arresting Onyx series, and it’s such a satisfying conclusion. Alan has a really interesting story, and I was so excited when I realized he was the brother of Mason, a protagonist earlier in the series. I loved his story, and seeing how it connected to what Mason and the other characters went through brought the series to a bit of a full-circle moment for me.

A hacker with strong ties to his family, Alan gets sucked into some shady dealings to protect his brother. Now, years later, he finally has a chance to sever these unwanted ties and deal with the guilt he feels for his part in the gang. I felt for Alan, who did everything to help his brother, and I found his to be on of the more compelling stories in the series.

Alan and Hannah, his bodyguard and fake girlfriend, have such great chemistry, and I loved their banter. Alan’s daughter is also a delight, and seeing him with her is so heart-warming. You can tell that Alan is a good guy who was forced into some bad stuff, and he’s desperate to live a clean life with his kid. I like how he and Hannah work to break the hold Onyx has on him.

Some of the minor characters and their stories are also intriguing, and I like that we get the answers to several questions I had over the course of the series as well as updates on the protagonists of the first three books. There are also some great themes about family, perseverance, and fighting for those you love. Thanks to Amber Daulton for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
