Sold to the Dark Vampire Prince is such an immersive and swoon-worthy start to Kat Kinney’s Immortal Royals series. I’ve read several of Kinney’s series now, and they’re always so entertaining! This one pulled me in with its unique supernatural world, great characters, and a fantastic romance.
The world is immersive from the start. A bleak and fascinating version of a post-apocalyptic Earth, humans have been pushed to the bottom of the social hierarchy after a series of devastating pandemics. Vampires, fae, and wolves now dominate, and there’s a darker, dystopian feel to everything, from the politics to the living situations. I liked how the supernatural elements were woven into issues that feel very relevant to us today, including inequality, the struggle for access to medicine and proper care, and the way those in power can shape and manipulate the lives of everyone else.
Dani and Alexander were layered and compelling protagonists, and I liked that the story is told from both of their perspectives. Dani is strong, resourceful, and so protective of her sisters. Pick-pocketing to try to afford her sister’s insulin, Dani’s spent most of her life putting everyone else first, even when her choices put her in danger or lead her into extreme situations, like selling herself at a blood auction. Alexander/Zander is a vampire prince surrounded by privilege and expectations, but there’s so much more to him than the cold, distant image he presents to the world. I loved discovering his softer side, especially his loyalty to his siblings and his desire to help people who have been overlooked or maltreated by those in power. His secret identity (Zander) gives him a way to try to right some of the wrongs he sees but can’t change from his position as prince. His dedication to this and his feelings toward Dani melted my heart.
The romance between Dani and Alexander is swoon-tastic! I loved the slow build and the way their connection developed. They come from completely different worlds, and both have their own reasons for holding back, so watching them slowly build trust was lovely. There’s so much sexual tension and chemistry between them, but Dani has a lot of mixed feelings since her feelings about the prince are very different from her feelings toward her coworker, even though they’re the same person (It’s complicated! lol). It was interesting to see how her impressions changed. And Alexander? Such a cinnamon-roll MMC! I loved how thoughtful and respectful he was with Dani, especially when it came to her boundaries and the difficult circumstances surrounding their relationship.
The found family vibes are another highlight as are the themes explored, including inequality, power, corruption, addiction, and the ways people are forced to survive when basic necessities become inaccessible. The story has a lot of depth and layers, and I’m excited to see where the series goes. Next is Sera and Finneas’s story, and I can’t wait!
