My Thoughts on The Knight’s Rebellious Maiden:
What a great start to Ella Matthews’s new The Knights’ Missions series! The story follows Sir Leopold, a knight on his first official mission after years of training with his two closest friends. The three of them have each been sent on separate assignments to prove their loyalty and worth. Leo’s task is to escort Lady Arianwen to her arranged marriage. But what seems like an easy task proves complicated, as Ari has no intention of going quietly, and her escape attempts quickly turn what should’ve been a simple job into anything but.
Leo and Ari are both well-developed and compelling characters, and I liked their personal journeys as much as their journey together. Leo is loyal, focused, and clearly determined to prove himself as a knight and show that he and his friends are honorable and capable. He takes his duty seriously, but he’s also still figuring out how to balance his role with what he wants for himself, something he really doesn’t think about until he meets Ari.
Ari, meanwhile, is clever, stubborn, and determined to forge her own path after a terrible one was made for her. She’s stuck in a terrible situation, betrothed to a much older man that she doesn’t want to marry, yet she refuses to give up on the life she wants. She’s also quick-thinking and not afraid to push back, and I loved how she kept Leo on his toes the entire time. If her efforts to slip away from Leo and her eventual marriage succeed, Leo fails his mission. This, in addition to their growing feelings for each other, raises the stakes high for both characters.
The romance between Ari and Leo is so swoon-worthy, and you could feel the chemistry between them from the start. Their banter and the tension between them were fantastic, and I loved the way they challenged each other on every step of their journey. Their relationship developed and their connection grew as they were forced to trust one another, and though falling in love wasn’t in either of their plans, their feelings were impossible to ignore.
Ella Matthews always delivers with her historical romances, and this one has so many of the elements I love— dynamic characters, excellent banter, so much longing and angst, and an intriguing plot with action and adventure. I’m already excited for the next books in the series! Leo’s two best friends were briefly introduced at the start of the book, and I’m eager to learn more about them. I have a feeling I’m going to love them as much as I loved Leo in this one! Special thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Harlequin Historical for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Ella Matthews lives and works in beautiful South Wales. She writes medieval romances for Mills & Boon. When not thinking about handsome heroes she can be found walking along the coast with her husband and their two children (probably still thinking about heroes but at least pretending to be interested in everyone else).
