The penniless in Blackbridge have only two choices: sell the body or sell the soul. And thanks to Eda Shaw, business is booming.
Indentured to a capricious demon known as Mr. Night, Eda and her brothers arrange illicit Pacts on his behalf, luring the city’s most desperate into trading years of their lives for their deepest desires. When a Pact goes awry and her brothers are arrested, Eda realizes she’ll need an infernal ally of her own: Kit’rath, an infuriating demon with a curious penchant for humanity and the only being in Blackbridge that Mr. Night seems to fear. As they race to rescue her family and save the city from ruin, an undeniable connection sparks between mortal and demon.
But Kit’s help doesn’t come cheap. Now, Eda risks losing her heart to the one who claims her years—and saving herself may prove the steepest cost of all.

This was such an engrossing story, with compelling characters, great world-building, and a swoon-worthy love story. I love the author’s writing style and was very quickly invested in Eda’s story as she bargains with a demon to save her brothers. The world has atmospheric and Gothic vibes, which sets the tone for the rest of the story.
Eda and Kit both have interesting backstories, and I loved learning more about each of them. Kit was especially intriguing, and I like how we learned more about him and his connection to the demon Eda and her brothers know. Eda’s relationship with her brothers also stood out to me. It was messy and complicated and so filled with love. I loved the way the author showed the many layers to their lifelong bond.
Of course, it’s no surprise that my favorite part of the story is the swoon-worthy romance. It was fantastic! Eda and Kit have an amazing amount of chemistry, and their banter is so fabulous. Theirs is a slow-building love story, and it is so worth the wait because some of the things Kit said literally made hearts appear in my eyes. lol
I also really liked the secondary characters, especially Ada’s brothers and Tripp, Kit’s loyal and ornery friend. He’s hilarious. The plot is also intriguing, with some really suspenseful moments and a few fun twists. The religious aspects weren’t my favorite, but they didn’t overwhelm the story, thankfully. And that end! I have questions!!

- forced proximity
- only one bed
- slow burn
- human x demon

A single day with her was worth a hundred lifetimes.
It was a special sort of cruelty, Eda thought, to be twisted into the monster you were born to slay.
Fact and belief rarely have much in common. With enough time, everything becomes mere story.
A heart is more valuable than any number of years, and harder still to get it back. Be certain of the one you give yours to.
Your whim is my delight and my torture.
