My Review:
I’m so pleased to be on the tour today for The Highlander’s Bridal Bid, the first book in Nicole Locke’s Lovers and Highlanders historical romance series. It’s a wonderful start to the series with interesting characters and a great love story.
Camron has been in love with Anna since he was ten years old, and, newly returned to their clan after being away in battle, he sees his opportunity to woo her. After making a drunken bet with his brother that he doesn’t quite remember, Camron must prove to Anna that they are meant to be together. However, Anna has been burned in the past, and she is not looking for love.
Camron’s feelings for Anna are super swoon-worthy. I adored all the little ways he showed her he cared, and some of his bigger gestures and declarations absolutely made me melt. With all he’s been through, in battle and life, he is now reaching for happiness, and he knows his happy ever after rests with Anna. Things aren’t always so perfect though, and Camron makes a few mistakes when trying to win Anna’s heavily guarded heart. She was so hurt and betrayed in the past that she finds it difficult to trust again. She’s put walls up and won’t let anyone, especially a potential love interest, get close.
I felt bad for Anna, who was burned by a man that promised her, and many other women, the world. She carries a lot of guilt and shame with her, and on top of her family responsibilities, which have been placed on her shoulders since her mother died, she has lost some of her fire. Seeing her slowly starting to give up control and let people in after holding everyone at arm’s length for so long is wonderful and shows how she is healing and moving on. I think Camron and his unwavering love is a big reason for her growth.
Anna never really saw Camron in a romantic way, since he’s five years younger than her. Though it seemed like a huge amount of years when they were young, now that they’re both adults, the age difference doesn’t seem so large. And now, instead of a first crush, Camron is deeply in love with her. He’s so in love, he was willing to step back and see her marry another man rather than announce his feelings. Her happiness has always been his priority, and that made me love his character even more.
The secondary characters are great too, and they make such a fun friend group. I’m eager to read their stories, as there are some simmering romances that I have a feeling will be as swoon-worthy as this one.
