Book Review: A Governess Should Never… Lure a Spy by Emily Windsor

Title: A Governess Should Never… Lure a Spy

Author: Emily Windsor

Series: The Governess Chronicles

Page Length: 300

Publication Date: April 11, 2024

Synopsis: “So tell me, Miss Jones, why should I employ you as governess?”
A question to rouse fear within the breast of any prospective governess, unless…she wasn’t a governess at all.
Yet Amelia must gain this position by whatever means necessary, for this gentleman, dubbed The Scandalous Hugh Cadwalader by fashionable society, is not all he seems. Behind the elegant finery and azure eyes is a dangerous warrior of a man, a tenacious spy for the Crown.
One who might just have turned traitor…

“Just one more question, if I may…”
With her perfect references and perfect demureness, Miss Jones appears…perfect.
Feminine guidance and distraction are required for his inquisitive ward while Hugh Cadwalader is on the trail of a traitor in the alleys of London’s Rookery.
But can such perfection be all it seems? And was that a glimpse of golden fire within those amber eyes?

The Dangerous Spy and… The More Dangerous Governess.
One should never judge a governess by her perfectly forged references or a spy by his unblemished Hessian boots, for behind both facades lay passion untamed, subterfuge unbound and a quest for justice.
A battle of wits with only one winner… Love.

With theatres of glister and glamour, nights of shadow and menace, hairpins of poison, and being pressed to a desk by a shirtless masculine chest, the vocation of governess has never been so perilous…to the heart.

A Governess Should Never Lure a Spy is a fantastic addition to Emily Windsor’s The Governess Chronicles historical romance series. It’s a story about a spy spying on a spy trying to solve a murder. It has such a great premise, and the story captivated me from the start with its unique mystery, intriguing characters, and delicious romance.

Hugh and Amelia have an amazing love story filled with subterfuge, danger, intrigue, and a deep, lasting bond. They make such a great pair, both personally and professionally, and I enjoyed their investigation as much as their romance. As Amelia poses as a governess to spy on Hugh, Hugh works to find out who killed his friend. However, Amelia and Hugh soon end up working together to reveal a traitor in their midst who might connect to all of the other problems they’re trying to solve. It’s an intriguing and emotionally charged investigation, which is heightened by the growing feelings developing between Amelia and Hugh.

The story also delves into Amelia’s history, and you can definitely see how her past changed and defined her. This is a woman who has faced heartbreaking rejection, so it’s wonderful to see how accepting and supportive Hugh is. Can I just say how much I love these two? Amelia is sharp and cunning, and she’s so astute and quick. And Hugh is a dream. A warrior with a rakish reputation, he is also so caring and kind, especially when it comes to his ward and Amelia.

I also loved the secondary characters, especially Hugh’s ward, Phoebe, and the people who work in Hugh’s house. They all have dynamic personalities and form a sort of family unit that I adore. I love how Phoebe marches to the beat of her own drum and how Hugh, Amelia, and others support her. The staunch loyalty of Hugh’s employees also stands out and says a lot about them and about the kind of man Hugh is. And, if you’ve read other books in the series, you’ll be thrilled with a few cameos of some beloved characters. That epilogue made my heart melt.

I think it’s safe to say I’m a huge fan of Emily Windsor. Every book I’ve read by the author has been a four or five-star read, and I always end up devouring the stories in one sitting. The characters and plot are intriguing, the messages are fantastic, and the romances are absolutely swoon-worthy. I’m so thankful to the author for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

  • The Romance! It’s super swoon-worthy!
  • Hugh! Can I make room for another book boyfriend? Yes, yes I can. lol
  • The mystery.

Sometimes words were not required. Just sympathy and silent strength.

Perfection did not exist; a sweet rose always hid thorns.

Allure and brutality were a potent mix.

Emily grew up in the north of England on a diet of historical romance and strong tea.

Unfortunately, you couldn’t study Regency slang, so she did the next best thing and gained a degree in Classics and History instead. This ‘led’ to an eight-year stint in engineering.

Having left city life, she now lives in a dilapidated farmhouse where her days are spent writing, fixing the leaky roof, battling the endless vegetation and finding pictures of well-tied cravats.
