Synopsis: Evie Jenkins didn’t know what she was thinking by agreeing to switch places with her American heiress cousin. After all, she’s naught but a poor―and usually quite sensible ―companion. All she has to do is spend six weeks among London society, pretending to be an heiress…and ensure that absolutely under no circumstances does she accept any proposals of marriage.

When his cousin declares himself in love with a new woman visiting from the States, Alexander Trenton―the sixth Duke of Hargrave―is determined to prove that the young lady in question is just another American “Dollar Princess” desperate for an English title. She seems innocent enough, but Alex is determined to expose her…by thoroughly seducing the lovely and fiercely intelligent heiress himself .

What he assumed would be just one simple kiss erupts into something wild, uncontrollable, and much too public. Now the duke must save her reputation with a betrothal…little knowing that his charming Princess harbors a secret that would certainly ruin them both.

My Review:

This was another fun, entertaining, and romantic read by Maddison Michaels! It has a great enemies-to-lovers romance, and the characters are layered, interesting, and fantastic! I also love the little bit of mystery throughout the story. It adds more suspense and tension to the plot and made for an intriguing and fun read.

Alexander dislikes Evie when he first meets her. Spurned by his ex-fiancée, who was also a wealthy American woman, he dubs Evie another American “Dollar Princess,” and when his cousin claims he is in love with Evie, Alexander sets out to prove Evie simply wants a title and doesn’t care about the man behind the title. What Alexander doesn’t know is that Evie is actually the companion and cousin to the actual heiress, and they have switched places for this trip.

Evie and Alexander have such a swoon-worthy love story. They have fabulous banter, and I love that Evie doesn’t back down from Alexander. She teases and antagonizes him, which most people won’t do since he’s a duke. She definitely gives as good as she gets, and I think Alexander finds it refreshing. Their shared love of fossils is also endearing and brings them even closer together. The scene when he starts questioning her, thinking he’s going to prove she’s lying about her knowledge of fossils, and instead, she proves she knows as much, if not more than him, is fantastic.

I always enjoy historical romances by Maddison Michaels. She has a great writing style that’s immersive, and she creates compelling and dynamic characters. Plus, the romances are always swoon-worthy. I’m hoping that there will be a spin-off of this book or that it’s the first in a series because I want to know more about Aimee and her boss. It sounds like they might have a brewing love story, and I’m eager to find out what happened between them while Evie was pretending to be Aimee. Also, Alexander’s cousin is lovely, and I’d love to read more about him too!

Thanks to Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. all thoughts are my own.

Favorite Lines:

“You can’t paint all American ladies with the same brush, Your Grace, especially not after your experience with just one lady.” She narrowed her gaze at him. “Doing so would be the same as my suggesting that all dukes are arrogant, pompous Englishmen after having met only you.

Tropes:

  • fake relationship
  • enemies-to-lovers
  • forced proximity
  • switched identities

  1. This sounds like a fun story, Julie. I can see this as a Hallmark Movie, except they don’t seem to do period pieces. Nice review.
