Synopsis:
A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in this Norse-inspired fantasy romance from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.
Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.
Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.
Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

Danielle L. Jensen is one of my favorite adult romantasy writers, so I was thrilled to have received an advanced copy of the first book in her new series. A Fate Inked in Blood is a captivating story packed with action, suspense, and intrigue. The world-building, characters, and plot are layered and complex, and I found myself easily falling into the story. Jensen’s writing is very immersive and rich with details that enhance the characters and setting, and I always get sucked into her stories quickly. This is no exception. It’s dark and intense, and there are a bunch of unexpected twists and turns that left me shook.
I love Freda! She is such a badass protagonist, and a fighter both literally and figuratively. This is a woman who has faced such adversity and heartbreak, and yet she survives. I became so engrossed in her story, and I love how the author brought this fierce and passionate woman to life. Devoted to her family, her sense of duty, and her people, Freya never gives up, even when the odds are stacked against her like they are in most of the book. Bjorn is fantastic, too, though his motivations aren’t as clear as Freya’s. I was eager to learn more about him, his past, and his feelings about his father and the political turmoil in their world.
Other characters are as fun to hate as Freya and Bjorn are to love, and there are several morally grey characters that I’m eager to learn more about. I have a feeling the next book in the series is going to reveal some interesting insights into these men and women, and I’m already super excited for it.
Of course, for me, the highlight of the book is the incredibly swoon-worthy romance between Freya and Bjorn. Man, do these two have chemistry! They make such an amazing team, and their slow-burning romance is everything! Their love story is rife with danger, intrigue, secrets, lies, and more, and both characters are put to the test. I so wanted Freya and Bjorn to end up together, but I also knew Jensen was going to rip out my heart before patching it up again. Hopefully, the same will happen to her characters. Lol
The plot is super suspenseful and intriguing, and there are so many dangerous human and non-human threats that put Freya’s life at constant risk. Whew! This is not a light read, and there are some darker moments, but they only highlight the difficulties and hardships Freya goes through. It’s so engrossing, and there are some powerful themes about survival, fighting for one’s autonomy, the corruptive nature of power, greed, and more.
I really enjoyed this story. It was a fun buddy read, and after that shock at the end, I need the next book asap. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

“Every time I think I have your measure, you surprise me,” he murmured. “I hope that never changes.”
I don’t give a shit about what you think when what you think is complete shit.”
It is hard to keep one’s wits when faced with a woman as beautiful as the sight of shore to a man who has been lost at sea.
How can a man control your fate when he is not even the master of his own?”

Great review! Glad we were able to buddy read it together! I am really curious what will happen in book 2 after that ending!
